Today is the official release day of my second book: THE DRAGON AND THE PEARL.
Champagne for everyone! Well, sparkling apple cider for me.
Come over and celebrate with a geeky history blog about Tang Dynasty Courtesans and their sexual and societal role in imperial China. There’s also a book giveaway if you’re feeling lucky.
Tang Dynasty courtesans: High class prostitutes?
Do I know how to party or what? As you may have guessed it, at any given party I’m the one in the corner munching on cheese and crackers and hanging with the other nerds.

The Most Beautiful Courtesan of Them All…
Former Emperor’s consort Ling Suyin is renowned for her beauty; the ultimate seductress. Now she lives quietly alone–until the most ruthless warlord in the region comes and steals her away…
Li Tao lives life by the sword, and is trapped in the treacherous, lethal world of politics. The alluring Ling Suyin is at the center of the web. He must uncover her mystery without falling under her spell–yet her innocence calls out to him. How cruel if she, of all women, can entrance the man behind the legend…

Win an advance copy of The Dragon and the Pearl before the release date. Goodreads will randomly select the recipients and I believe I’ve opened it up to any country where I’ve had reader contact or newsletter subscriber so no one is left out.
Goodreads does ask that if you win, you leave an honest review after reading the book. I’d certainly appreciate it as well.

Slowly recovering from RWA and other things…

Fun news — Butterfly Swords has been translated into Spanish and is now available as El vuelo de las mariposas (The Flight of the Butterflies). Which totally makes me curious about how the prose translates over! Maybe I need to enlist a former student to read the Spanish version.
I need to look up how to do international versions of my website now like the way Courtney Milan does it.
***
RWA was fun, but completely exhausting. I was notoriously bad at taking notes, taking pictures, taking prisoners at RWA this year so no cool report from me.
Just the highlights:
- Went to the librarian luncheon for the first time. It was fun sitting with librarians from NYC and Barbara Vey as well as meeting up with booksellers and librarians during the networking hour. And I actually knew some faces so I wasn’t wandering around like a lost duckling like last year.
- My first RWA signing. It’s something you dream of an aspiring author and there I was! Some very nice readers and bloggers came by to say hi. Also with Harlequin editors stopping by and RTC folk looking for buttons as well as Ruby Slipper scavenger hunters, I didn’t look so lonely.
- Had a great lunch with Sabrina Jeffries and Miranda Neville at Sardi’s. Sabrina was intelligent, fun, and so knowledgeable and it was a great time just to eat and chat. We got a little preview of her Numbers talk since I was going to miss it for the Harlequin Historical tea.
- The pinnacle of course was meeting my agent, Gail Fortune, face to face. As I was getting dressed for the Harlequin party, I told my roomies I felt like Cinderella going to meet my fairy godmother.

This is a great event with an amazing amount of online support and some great offerings — and all for a great cause. It starts up May 1 and goes until May 31. Last year I bid on a bunch of items, but came away empty handed. Maybe this year I’ll get lucky…
I’m also very proud to be donating several items:
1) Butterfly Swords fan pack – Last year during the Butterfly Swords launch celebration, I was giving away an annotated copy of Butterfly Swords. Think of it as the DVD commentary, but in book form. The winner, Desere, generously offered to donate it to the Brenda Novak auction since she hadn’t read Butterfly yet. Like me, she had diabetes in her family.
So for the one-of-a-kind annotated copy of Butterfly Swords, a special souvenir map of the Tang Dynasty (which I’m also creating with my little hands) and a pack of autographed romance trading cards, head over to the auction and start bidding!
2) The Sisters’ Critique – I’m quite happy about this. Little Sis has agreed to do a 30 page critique along with me. The winner will get two separate critiques from me and Little Sis. We both talk books and movies all the time, so I’m curious to see how we’ll both approach the same manuscript.
Aside from those personal reasons, I swear by Little Sis’ insight and feedback. I think she has a lot to offer any writer. I’ve also been giving workshops where I talk about making that last leap from “almost there” to getting read and getting published. In the workshops, I talk about “breaking good writing to make it better.” In honor of the Sisters’ Critique, I’m going to run a blog series next week about a specific example of one of my openings, how my sister critiqued it, and how I modified it. It’s a special peek into my writing process. I’m a little nervous about that, but I think it could be fun. Stay tuned starting next Monday! Oh yes, and bid!
More items:
1) Honorary Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood membership – You know you want to be a Ruby-Slippered Sister (or Brother). Here’s a fun chance to get 3 critiques and network with the RSS as well as be the first ever Honorary Ruby.
2) Kindle e-Reader with Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood releases
3) Set of Romance Trading Cards – (ITEM NO. 2170283 – 2170287) Over 300 cards in the set. Five sets available!
You must register to bid. Register now and be ready for next week.

I had no idea about this until Courtney Milan and the Twitterverse pointed it out to me. I’m stunned, excited, happy!
From Publishers Weekly:
Web Exclusive Butterfly Swords
Jeannie Lin, Harlequin Historical
$5.99 mass market (288p) ISBN 978-0-373-29614-9
Chang Ai Li flees her wedding and her enraged bridegroom in Lin’s exciting debut, an adventure tale set in turbulent 8th-century China. Ai Li, the only daughter in a family of mighty warriors, is trained by her grandmother to fight with light butterfly swords and defend herself and her family’s honor. Ryam is a foreigner trying to get back to his stronghold on the far western edge of the empire. After he helps Ai Li fight off brigands and soldiers, she hires him to help her evade her pursuers and get back to the imperial city. Ryam is uncomfortable when Ai Li calls him honorable, while she is amazed that he listens to what she has to say. Despite being from different cultures and classes, they fall in love. The especially vibrant writing describing the culture, clothes, and countryside saves this from being just another tale of impossible love. (Oct. 1)

It’s November and though I’m not doing Nano, I’m jumping back into the writing saddle.
Harlequin is doing an intensive, one week Editorial Week and interactive writing extravaganza — I’m not sure what else to call it. They’re hitting the blogs, Twitter, podcasts, and all of weblandia with romance writing info and insights.
There’s quite a lot on the SYTYCW calendar. I’m assuming the times are in Eastern Standard Time. If you check out the Podcast at 3pm EST on November 1st, I believe that’s where you’ll hear from me and fellow HMB author Maisey Yates as well as debut author Meg Maguire about our experiences as brand spanking new authors for Harlequin: How I Became a Romance Author
Enjoy and happy writing!

Big news: The Dragon and the Pearl has been accepted for publication. Now the cycle begins all over again.
I’m headed to the New Jersey Romance Writer’s conference. Hoping to attend some great workshops and meet up with several long distance writer buddies. I’ll also be signing on Saturday at the Woodbridge Renaissance Hotel.
Should be a good time. And then my crazy road show will slow down. Nothing more until the end of November for the Music City chapter where I’ll be opening for the lovely Barbara Poelle and Holly Root. Waiting to exhale…
Take care and have a good weekend. I know I will.

I’ve decided that pretty much my mum is always right. *sigh* As if she wasn’t always right before! She’s going to be intolerable now.
I told her I might want to do an ad in a Vietnamese newspaper for Butterfly Swords. She told me to forget the ad. Just send a copy of the book to them. So I did and the editor passed it down to one of the journalists who read it and then called me for an interview.
I thought it was just going to be an online feature, but yesterday I received a package in the mail which contained this:
I was more than a bit flabbergasted because that’s the entire front page of the English language insert of Nguoi Viet, the largest Vietnamese newspaper. THE ENTIRE PAGE.
Butterfly Swords takes up almost a fourth of the layout and the picture of me hugging my book is huge too. I’m completely dumbfounded. I must send a big ol’ thank you note tomorrow once the room stops spinning.
