When this manuscript first entered the contest circuit, it was titled Silk and Shadows which, of course, is the title of a Mary Jo Putney novel. Jeannie kept on searching for another title, at one point calling it Silk and Seduction, until author and chaptermate Elisabeth Grayson/Karyn Witmer-Gow suggested the title of The Dragon and the Pearl when she heard of the Beauty and the Beast theme. The new title layered an additional theme into the manuscript -- the dragon's eternal search for the elusive pearl.

The character of Ling Suyin was inspired by imperial consort Yang Yuhuan whose tragic story is recounted in the famous poem, Song of Everlasting Sorrow. Lady Ling was one of Jeannie's favorite secondary characters until finally getting her own story.

The release date for this book is TBD, but it is currently slated to follow Butterfly Swords.
