The Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood Winter Writing Festival starts today and goes for 50 days. During last year’s writing fest, I finished My Fair Concubine, which is going to be a June 2012 release. I’m counting on the festival to save my butt again this year.
Come join for support, camaraderie and, of course, prizes!

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of The Dragon and the Pearl alongside fellow Ruby Sister Liz Talley whose fifth Super Romance, A Touch of Scarlet, releases today. We’ve posted dueling interviews and will be giving away a two book set to one lucky commenter:

The Ruby Sisters are hosting a writing festival for those of us that want to get a jumpstart on the writing goal for the new year. Big pluses: You get to set your own goals, chat challenges, shiny prizes, and this one doesn’t happen over a major holiday.
It starts on January 10, but you can register now at the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood Winter Writing Festival blog and set your daily goal. Mine is to write 10 pages a day as I’m Fast Drafting this next novel. Be pretty cool to have a novel done by February…

Just a post to list some guest blogs and other interesting tidbits:
Carrie Lofty of Unusual Historicals has written a very well-thought out article about what sort of elements authors of unusual historical romances have to consider when targeting their stories for a mass market audience. She’s interviewed editors and agents as well as authors (myself included!) and put together a succinct and comprehensive look into the balancing act of writing unusual settings.Walking the Tightrope by Carrie Lofty
I’m blogging today at the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood about “Writing with a Cinematic Eye” where I try to describe how I re-think scenes and translate them from a cinematic view to words on the page.
And last, but not least. December is here! It’s the first day of the Harlequin Historical Advent Calendar celebration! Visit Lynna Banning to kick off the event. Each day you participate will enter you in a mini-giveaway for that author as well as the Grand Prize giveaway – a Kindle 3G. (I loves my Kindle. I really, really do.) Come back here on Dec. 4 (Saturday) for my contribution.
Miss a day? Don’t worry. You can go back and still complete the activity for an extra chance to win. 22 days — 22 authors.

The Karate Kid? The A-Team?!?
Most people claim to hate them, but Hollywood seems to be throwing quite a few our way. I’m blogging about some recent and upcoming remakes at the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood today.

This is a wonderful example of the sense of community and charity among writers and readers. New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak started this auction to raise money for diabetes research after her child was diagnosed with diabetes. This year, her goal is to raise one million dollars.
The Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood is donating a basket of gift items. It includes regional specialties from all over the world – Alaska and Australia are represented in there. Also several books and 3 partial critiques. I’m including a Gooey Louie butter cake from St. Louis as well as a critique and a butterfly swords souvenir charm. All the other sisters have pitched in as well. The pile of giveaway items is growing in my basement. It feels like Christmas!
But tempted as I am, I know these goodies are meant for a generous bidder and not for me. Follow the link to our basket — and then you can browse the other items as well. I’m watching several already and can’t wait to bid! I’m eyeing some promotion packages (because I have to get ready for that) as well as a deep edit from Margie Lawson, lunch with Jamie Ford, and a trip to London for two. Wish me luck!
Bidding on the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood gift basket opens on May 1st. Some other items will open tonight.

I discuss my pre-game rituals over at the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood today:

Actually, a more interesting topic is yesterday’s discussing about the academic study of romance. Had some heavyweights weighing in:

The Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood is posting call stories for the Golden Heart and RITAs today. About this time last year I was a basketcase. The versions I had submitted after the Golden Heart contest were starting to final, but I didn’t know if I had made the critical changes in time for the GH. Plus I was finding that 4 out of 5 judges tended to score Butterfly Swords well, while one judge would hate it. Exactly the odds I needed for the GH!
All this sounds a lot more well thought out than it actually was inside my head.
Well, one of my crazy things I did was Google all things Golden Heart related. If anyone’s as crazy as I was and you need your fix, head on over to the Ruby Sisters and hear about the calls from past GH and RITA finalists.
My GH call story is actually pretty boring, but it was the thing that started it all:

Somehow I volunteered to do two guest blogs on the same day and the week of Christmas too! Luckily, it’s the last guest blogging I should need to do for the year.
I’m over at the Ruby Slipper Blog and taking a page out of Star Wars to discuss what I learned about writing a good action scene: Fight! Fight! Writing Effective Action Scenes
I’m also over at Unusual Historicals discussing the The Seasons: Duanwu and the Dragon Boat Festival.
I’ll be hopping on another plane too. Need to catch my breath…Four more days until Christmas…
