Just a post to list some guest blogs and other interesting tidbits:

Carrie Lofty of Unusual Historicals has written a very well-thought out article about what sort of elements authors of unusual historical romances have to consider when targeting their stories for a mass market audience. She’s interviewed editors and agents as well as authors (myself included!) and put together a succinct and comprehensive look into the balancing act of writing unusual settings.Walking the Tightrope by Carrie Lofty

I’m blogging today at the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood about “Writing with a Cinematic Eye” where I try to describe how I re-think scenes and translate them from a cinematic view to words on the page.

And last, but not least. December is here! It’s the first day of the Harlequin Historical Advent Calendar celebration! Visit Lynna Banning to kick off the event. Each day you participate will enter you in a mini-giveaway for that author as well as the Grand Prize giveaway – a Kindle 3G. (I loves my Kindle. I really, really do.) Come back here on Dec. 4 (Saturday) for my contribution.

Miss a day? Don’t worry. You can go back and still complete the activity for an extra chance to win. 22 days — 22 authors.

Remember those calendars where every day you open a door and there’s a little chocolate or surprise inside as you count down the days until Christmas? Well, the talented authors of Harlequin Historical are doing a fun giveaway in December.

Join in and you’ll be entered to win the daily giveaway as well as the Grand Prize giveaway. If you miss a day, don’t worry. Many activities will remain active after the calendar date so you can always go back and catch up. The more days you participate, the more chances you’ll have.

…are yet to come.

The blog tour is nearing the end, but as they say on stage, you need a big finish right?

Today, I’m discussing my experiences as The New Kid on the Playground at The Pink Heart Society. For fun, you get to check out my alternative titles for Butterfly Swords. Come back to the PHS on October 26 as they discuss Butterfly Swords as their October book club pick.

I’m also discussing *ahem* Sex in Ancient China, an educational post that should be up Wednesday morning at Dirty Sexy Books.

And the final guest blog this week is something I seriously debated doing. It’s about promotion. I’m hoping it sparks discussion, because there’s a lot I’m still wondering about author promotion and the conventional wisdom seems to be that “you never know what will work”. I can’t seem to take that for an answer. I want to know what can be known!

So at Bria Quinlan‘s blog on Thursday, I’ll be going “Inside a Grass Roots Marketing Campaign” and discussing what I learned from the promotion of Butterfly Swords. It’s one of the rare times you’ll see my business mind emerge.

I’ve decided that pretty much my mum is always right. *sigh* As if she wasn’t always right before! She’s going to be intolerable now.

I told her I might want to do an ad in a Vietnamese newspaper for Butterfly Swords. She told me to forget the ad. Just send a copy of the book to them. So I did and the editor passed it down to one of the journalists who read it and then called me for an interview.

I thought it was just going to be an online feature, but yesterday I received a package in the mail which contained this:

I was more than a bit flabbergasted because that’s the entire front page of the English language insert of Nguoi Viet, the largest Vietnamese newspaper. THE ENTIRE PAGE.

Butterfly Swords takes up almost a fourth of the layout and the picture of me hugging my book is huge too. I’m completely dumbfounded. I must send a big ol’ thank you note tomorrow once the room stops spinning.

Blog Tour: Blogging at The Burton Review about my Tang Dynasty muses. I’m the guest author this week at Unusual Historicals and you can comment up until next Sunday to be entered to win a copy of Butterfly Swords. Also blogging about Mashups and Crossovers with pics of my inspirational Fast Draft collages.

Review Round-Up: A C+ Review for Butterfly Swords from Vagabond. One shining spot is the reviewer is interested in Adrian and Miya’s story. Also a pair of reviews from Poisoned Rationality. One for The Taming of Mei Lin and one for Butterfly Swords. The Romance Reviews is launching their new book portal site and featuring a giveaway for Butterfly Swords on the site.

We’re reaching the mid-point of October, so I can definitely say the Butterfly Swords Launch is underway. Fly little book, fly…

This is the last week to enter for the Grand Prize giveaways. I’m quite excited about the prizes as they’re very special to me:

I realized, however, that there are some people who are entered multiple times and fans of Butterfly Swords. There are others signed up who may not have read it yet. So if any winner wants to opt for just a nice clean copy of Butterfly Swords to read, instead of the geeky annotated version, I’ll happily make the switch. I figured I’d then put any traded prizes up in next year’s Brenda Novak auction or some other worthy cause.

There is also another pretty cool Butterfly Swords contest going on, hosted by Bria Quinlan, YA author and one of my trusted readers. The pictures so far gave me a good laugh. I hope there will be a couple more entries. It’s always good to smile.

I’m tempted to enter a picture of my Asian books collection because…I got some game there. Though, of course, I’d be ineligible to win.

Two more signings this month! This Saturday at the Crestwood Barnes & Noble right down the street and then next Saturday in New Jersey at the NJRW Conference. Here’s the road show. Shortly after that, Butterfly Swords will be flitting out of bookstores and only available for order online.

You can still join the celebration and enter the drawings by blogging, tweeting, and getting the word out. I’ll draw the names October 15 and post on October 16 before I head out to the MORWA meeting and my signing.

Last week was a blast! I’m only barely recovered, but here are the highlights.

I finally made it out to the Emerald City Writer’s Conference. My good friend, author MG Braden, has been urging me to go for years now. It’s the largest RWA conference on the west coast and I can’t recommend it enough. Well-organized, great speakers, and a raffle extravaganza that whips everyone into a shopping frenzy–and it’s all for a good cause too!

MG Braden and me at lunch

I didn’t have a workshop at this conference, so it was nice to be able to enjoy the workshops and the signing. It was my very first signing and I may have done a little dance when I first came up to my table and saw the books stacked and ready.

I whip out the official chop for my first autograph

It went very well! I got to chat with a lot of people — several who had judged Butterfly Swords and remembered it from contests over two years ago.

The conference food was pretty good, though not so photogenic, so I didn’t get any great food pics a la Cindy Pon’s blog. However, I did snap one of the official ECWC drink: The Bodice Ripper.

The Bodice Ripper is posing besides the conference’s true star drink, the Lemon Drop. Best Lemon Drop Ever. It was later responsible for a short bout of karaoke that evening. You have to understand, I’d had my first book signing. Butterfly Swords had sold out. The Lemon Drops at the Bellevue Hilton use freshly squeezed lemon juice with the perfect balance of sugar and vodka. After two of them, I felt on “Top of the World” — Which is the song I proceeded to try to sing on stage.

Jeannie Lin and MG Braden live and unrehearsed

Note the skeptical look that the DJ is casting us. These new experiences keep me humble…

After the conference, I flew to Northern California to visit my sister. Where apparently I said hello to Little Sis and her husband, and proceeded to direct the rest of my attention to their cat. I hadn’t seen Ollie in months and he’d gotten skinny. Apparently they finally allowed him outdoors and it’s amazing how much a little exercise will do for an oversized tabby.

All my pictures of the Norcal trip consisted of cat and cupcakes. I’m firing myself as a photographer.

I returned home at the end of the week for my first local signing at Rose’s Bookshop. Another wonderfully supportive crowd!

Amanda Berry, Maggie Mae Gallagher, Sunita from DA, and myself

And did I mention the cake?

I think Wendy from Rose’s purposefully found the biggest knife possible to put beside the cake

That evening, Dear Author hosted a book chat about Butterfly Swords. I attended the first part for a Q&A with readers. I was nervous at first, but it was an absolute dream. All I ever wanted was for people to read and discuss my book. *sniffle* I bugged out for the second half so everyone could continue to kibitz without me. I haven’t checked out the rest of the transcript, but you can replay the Dear Author book chat if you missed it.

I’m giving myself a little rest before I check out the last part. According to a few little birdies, there was some discussion about how Butterfly Swords should have ended. Beware spoilers!

And there was one special little birdy waiting for me when I got home:

Hubby got a hold of one of my bookmarks and did a bit of arts and crafts to show me I had a fan at home. Life is very, very good.

I’ve uploaded my ECWC pics to Facebook. You can also check out the Rose’s Bookhouse signing album.

Next booksigning is at the MORWA October meeting where I’ll be signing beside Jim and Shannon Butcher. Yes, THE Jim and Shannon Butcher. Full disclosure: I intend to Photoshop their long line of fans onto my table in post-production. I got skillz and I’m going to use them. (The photos included in this post have not been retouched in any way.)

What are Butterfly Swords?

Warrior Women Month:

I’m kicking off Warrior Women month with a quick tutorial on butterfly swords. Also tomorrow,  I have an interview with Mandy Sayah, Wing Chun instructor.

Blog Tour:

Blogging about how I came to write historical romance at The Minding Spot. The blog is doing their own giveaway of a copy of the Taming of Mei Lin.

***

The Taming of Mei Lin and Butterfly Swords both feature sword fights involving butterfly swords. I’ve received many curious inquiries about both the weapons and the fighting style, so I thought I’d showcase them today.

I chose butterfly swords for my heroine because:

1) I had some experience with them

2) They could be hidden easily and carried around with her various outfits

3) The techniques are  fast and exciting to describe

4) The swords were distinctive and feminine, in contrast to the swords used by the hero and the villain

In this video, Grandmaster William Cheung demonstrates the butterfly swords form. The narration is Sifu Eric Oram.

This demonstration shows several techniques for butterfly swords against a broadsword. The key techniques are redirecting and controlling the opponent’s blade with the butterfly swords, and counterattacking immediately after a block.

And finally, the swords featured in the grand prize giveaway aren’t technically butterfly swords as they don’t have the handguard. They’re steel and sharpened and STILL pretty cool.

Join the Launch Celebration by tweeting, blogging, and getting the word out and you’ll be eligible to win. Details here.

If I could describe what’s inside my head right now, it’s like the first trip to Disneyland when you’re walking down Main Street and, oh my gosh, everything looks amazing and smells so good and the moment you turn your head there’s something new.

And you don’t want to miss any of it in case Mom and Dad never take you here again.

I’m a published author, finally…

It’s my release day for The Taming of Mei Lin! It’s also my digital release day for Butterfly Swords. Yes, indeed. You can buy the digital version of Butterfly Swords and The Taming of Mei Lin from eHarlequin. “Mei Lin” is also available via Amazon or Barnes and Noble. If you want a hard copy of Butterfly Swords, you’ll have to wait for October 1st. One more month…I’m bouncing with excitement.

Official Launch Celebration kicks off

The official launch celebration kicks off today. Spread the word and be entered in the celebration drawings to be held September 15, October 1, and October 15. Fans and friends have already started spreading the word. Check out the official Butterfly Swords promotion page at http://www.butterfly-swords.com

The blog tour also kicks off today. I’ll be giving away download codes for The Taming of Mei Lin from eHarlequin at a couple guest blogs. The first one is today The Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood where I blog about “Writing Short and Not So Sweet“.  Check out the rest of the Blog Tour for the rest of the month and October.

Warrior Women Month

To celebrate my feisty heroines and honor the strong women who inspired them, I’m dedicating September to Warrior Women on my blog. I’ll be featuring interviews from three kick-butt warrior women throughout the month: Wing Chun  instructor Mandy Sayah, stuntwoman and Ninja Warrior Luci Romberg, and swords expert Linda Heenan.  We’ll also be chatting about our favorite heroines – real and fictional throughout the month.

Get the RSS Feed and don’t miss out.

Artwork for Butterfly Swords

I saved the best for last. I was so thrilled to sell my first book, that I splurged a little and commissioned artwork from one of my favorite DeviantArtists, Wendy (Cha Cha) aka schumy330.I’ll be adding an autographed, color print of this to the Grand Prize drawing.

Her depiction of Ryam and Ai Li nearly brought tears to my eyes. I even love the little palanquin in the background and the armored soldiers. *sniffs*

P.S. Yes, I know that’s a jian she’s holding and not a butterfly sword (dao). It’s PERFECT and GORGEOUS.

Butterfly Swords BINGO

BINGO!

Originally I was trying to come up with a way where people who’ve followed the Butterfly Swords and Mei Lin Blog Tour could enter the Launch Celebration drawings. Following and tracking all commenters would have been heinous. And I fully didn’t expect people to really want to read THAT many blogs.

So I came up with the idea of a trivia game. You can answer the trivia questions through a handful of the blog appearances. Now, I considered maybe a Blog Tour drinking game might be in order. One shot for every time Jeannie mentions “wuxia”!

But that would have had people tipsy real quick and wouldn’t be responsible of me since people blog surf at work. So instead I present to you Butterfly Swords BINGO.

Send me the five answers through my Contact form to make BINGO and you’ll receive 5 entries in the giveaway. If anyone is crazy enough to give all the answers for BLACKOUT:  Um, I might be a little scared…but you’ll receive 10 entries into the giveaway. Enter “BINGO” as your subject.

Remember, your name will remain in the bucket from when you enter until the very last Grand Prize drawing. Drawings will be held on September 15, October 1, and October 15 for a variety of prizes. Have fun!

Rules: The gameboard is just for you to keep track. Print it out or bookmark this page if you like. You only need to send me the answers, not the gameboard. If you’re going through the center, use “Free Space” as one answer. And I will accept more than just the first BINGO.
